Encaustic Workshops

Encaustic is the ancient medium or technique of painting with molten beeswax mixed with resin and colored pigments that are heat-fused in layers to a support. The versatility, translucency, and textural capabilities of encaustic has made it  attractive to a wide variety of artists - painters, sculptors, photographers and mixed media artists have all been enticed to experiment with this fascinating medium. With my own background in textile design, the ability to incorporate other materials, use vibrant colors, and create a variety of textures has caused me to fall in love with this amazing art form.
It gives me great joy to be able to share my passion with others.

Testimonials

"Emma is a wonderful teacher, I’ve taken all her classes so far as well as studio time, and have learned so much. Her new studio is a lovely place to learn: spacious layout with all the materials & equipment you could want. In terms of guidance, she has a lot of knowledge and a pleasantly low key yet organized way of teaching. Working on our own pieces, she steps in with just the right suggestions on technique and composition to help you move to the next level with your art." Karla, PA.

“I gained many useful skills/techniques and thoroughly enjoyed the class time with Emma and the other students. The studio is thoughtfully and ideally set up as a teaching and interactive space.  I am sure I speak for us all in thanking Emma for generously, sincerely and thoroughly sharing her time, talents, wisdom, space, materials and techniques with all of us.” Michelle

“Emma was the kindest, most patient, and most generous instructor.
She did not hold anything back. She answered my miles-long list of questions, demonstrated her techniques, and allowed me to follow along and try her techniques by her side.
(She didn’t even hide her good brushes from me!)” Jill Myer, OR

"My favorite one-day workshop was an encaustic class with Emma Ashby at her studio in Portsmouth...This single workshop inspired me to pursue learning more about this medium and provided a great day of art making and conversation with other art enthusiasts.” Vandy, Portsmouth Herald
